Can You Take E-Liquid On A Plane? Find Out Here!

Can You Take E-Liquid On A Plane?

Electronic cigarettes can never be used by passengers when flying. However, they must be kept on them at all times and not left unattended.

Bringing vape and its E-liquid is a bit more complicated than a pack of cigarettes. Both the vape device and juice fall into a category that airlines deem potentially hazardous - lithium battery operated device and liquid.

But, don't fret. You can bring both your vape and E-liquid with you if you follow some special instructions.

First, let's learn why carrying E-liquid on a plane can be complicated.

Why Can't You Bring E-Liquid On A Plane?

Airlines introduced liquid restrictions when terrorists concealed chemicals in seemingly harmless items. They regulated how many and how much liquid passengers could bring on the cabin. That makes it hard for terrorists to get enough chemicals to make explosives.

Most airlines and the Transportation Security Administration allow 3.4 ounces or around 100ml size limit per liquid product on carry-on baggage.

While generally, there are no limits on how much you can pack on your checked-in baggage.

Here's how you can pack your E liquids for both carry-on and checked-in baggage.

E-Liquid In Carry On Baggage

As previously stated, most airlines allow 3.4 ounces or around 100ml size limit per liquid product on carry-on baggage.

The liquid rule is:

3 - 3 oz or 100ml per bottle limit on the amount of liquid

1 - one clear quart-sized plastic bag. All your 3 oz containers should fit into one clear quart-sized plastic bag. You can bring as many 3 oz containers you can fit in your quart-sized plastic bag.

1 - Each passenger can only bring one of the quart-sized plastic bags.

Either just buy smaller-sized vape juice bottles of your favorite flavor. Or, portion the contents of your bigger-sized bottle into 3 oz or 100ml per bottle or less.

Avoid glass containers because they're potentially dangerous.

Airline staff will screen your carry-on baggage. So, make sure your liquids are packed appropriately to avoid inconveniences.

E-Liquid In Checked-In Baggage

There is no limit on the amount of liquid you can put in your checked-in baggage, so you can take as much as you want. However, make sure you pack them properly to avoid any mess in case of leaks or breakage.

Place your E-liquid containers inside a waterproof sealable plastic bag to be safe. Wrap or surround your sealed E-liquid container with other items you can use as padding like clothes. You can use bubble wrap if available.

Wrap each container individually.

Place them in the middle of your luggage and far away from other hard items. Put them in the middle of your baggage and make sure they're not touching any sides of the bag.

All of these are to ensure your container won't hit anything hard and break or leak even when handled roughly.

How Much E-liquid Can You Bring?

For carry-on luggage, as many 3 oz containers, you can fit in your quart-sized plastic bag. Keep in mind that toothpaste, soap, perfume, and shampoo are also considered liquids, so save some space for those in your bag.

For check-in luggage, there's no limit.

What About Your Vape Device?

You should pack your vape pens and devices in your carry-on bag.

Most vaping devices have lithium-ion batteries, and batteries are seen as a potentially dangerous good. This is because batteries can ignite and short circuit if mishandled.

Common rules for bringing your vape on a plane:

  • Vape devices with removable batteries can only be packed in your checked-in baggage if you remove all batteries. They can also be packed in your carry-on baggage. This also applies to other electronic devices.
  • Vape devices with built-in batteries should be packed in your carry-on baggage.
  • Vape batteries and any spare batteries should be in your carry-on baggage.

And the lithium-ion battery you have must be protected from damage and kept away from another metal object. This is for the battery safety as well as your and the other passenger's safety.

Different ways to pack batteries:

  • Tape the terminals.
  • Use original battery packaging.
  • Wrap the battery with non-conducting materials.

Note:

Aside from turning them off, make sure to empty your vape tank of any liquid, so you don't need to worry about leaking.
